Sumaiya Ahmed

President

Sumaiya Ahmed is a senior majoring in Human Biology and is deeply passionate about service, advocacy, and uplifting her fellow students. As President of Hunter College Undergraduate Student Government, she represents over 18,000 undergraduates, working to advance equity, strengthen student services, and build a more inclusive campus community. Beyond USG, Sumaiya founded and led the first college chapter of Muslims Giving Back at Hunter, organizing initiatives like "Blessing Bags" for local shelters and creating interfaith service coalitions to uplift and empower the community. Her commitment to civic engagement and challenging public perceptions of the Muslim identity reflects her deep dedication to advocacy and service. Sumaiya was personally chosen by the Chancellor and the Provost of Hunter College to serve as the first undergraduate student representative on Hunter’s Strategic Planning Steering Committee, providing critical student perspectives on long-term institutional goals and campus development. In addition to her leadership roles, Sumaiya is a neuroscience research assistant at Mount Sinai’s Nestler Lab, studying the molecular and genetic mechanisms underlying addiction. Through all of these experiences, Sumaiya has strengthened her desire to pursue medicine as a physician, helping her understand the importance of bridging science, compassionate care, and community advocacy to better support patients and meet the needs of diverse communities. On a personal note, Sumaiya’s journey at Hunter has been a true family affair; she has attended Hunter alongside her older brother and five of her cousins, deepening her love and pride for the Hunter community. Her blood bleeds purple, and she takes every opportunity to share that Hawk spirit, welcome new faces, and help fellow students feel at home.
